Why these tools only work in advance

A deposit limit set when you are not playing is a limit that holds. The same limit set after a loss gets raised, because at that moment the decision is being made by a part of you with a different objective.

That is the single most useful thing to know about these tools, and it is worth more than the list of tools itself. Someone who sets a ceiling on the day they open the account still has it a month later. Someone who intends to set one "when it becomes necessary" will find that the moment it becomes necessary is precisely the moment it does not get set.

What each tool does

Deposit limit. Caps how much you can pay in over a period. It is the most effective because it acts before play. Increases normally carry a delay before taking effect while decreases apply immediately: that asymmetry is deliberate, and it is what makes the tool work.

Loss limit and session limit. Stop a session at a threshold. Weaker than a deposit limit because they intervene once play has started, but useful for anyone who loses track of time more readily than of money.

Cooling off period. Closes access for a short spell, typically a day to a few weeks. It exists to break a chase in progress, which is the situation in which playing most often turns into pursuing.

Self exclusion. Closes the account for a long period or permanently, and is not reversible before it expires. With a foreign licence it applies to that operator only, which is a real difference from the national registers operated in licensed markets, and anyone treating it as a safety net should know how wide theirs is.

The signs that matter

They are not about how much is lost. They are about the relationship with the game, and they are recognisable at small amounts too:

• playing to recover a loss, rather than to play;
• hiding how much you play, or understating how often;
• using money meant for something else;
• being unable to stop when you had told yourself that was the last one;
• thinking about gambling at times when you are not gambling.

Gambling is not a way to produce income. Every game carries a house margin that does not depend on skill and is not cancelled by any strategy: RTP and volatility describe how a game behaves over large numbers, not how an evening will go. Ireland. Problem Gambling Ireland offers online support and a national helpline, and the Gambling Awareness Trust funds free counselling through Extern Problem Gambling.

Canada. Support is organised provincially. ConnexOntario covers Ontario with a 24 hour line; each other province runs an equivalent service through its health authority.

Australia. Gambling Help Online provides a free 24 hour national service by phone and web chat, including support for family members.

New Zealand. The Gambling Helpline runs a free 24 hour national line, with separate services for Māori, Pasifika and Asian communities.

Anywhere. Gambling Therapy offers free online support in multiple languages and is not tied to any single country, which makes it the practical option when a national service does not fit.

Asking early is the only variable genuinely under your control. It does not become an easier decision by waiting.

Minimum age

Gambling is restricted to those aged 18 or over. Age verification is part of the document check described on the payouts page, and an account held by a minor is closed with winnings voided.
